You play as “the new one” (a child who has just arrived in the small town and affectionately nicknamed “asshole” by Chief Cartman), whose appearance and class you can customize (choose between warrior, mage, thief and Jew). ). Your mission, if you accept it, will be to fight tooth and nail to recover the “Staff of Truth”, a legendary artifact on which the fate of humanity depends. All this under the command of the Mage King Cartman and your staunch allies Stan, Kenny, Butters, etc.

Fans of the series will be immediately familiar with the plot and universe of the game and will laugh at the first moments. For others, be warned: South Park is vulgar, provocative, sometimes insulting and very often scatophile . Avoid if you think that humor has to limit itself to certain limits!

Beyond the storyline, South Park: The Stick of Truth is above all an excellent role-playing game masterfully produced by Obsidian entertainment. The hilarious and absurd dialogues are coupled with the exploration of the city of South Park (concealing many surprises and hidden quests) and especially with a rather worked combat system which does not hesitate to innovate.

An excellent combat system but perfect handling on PC

Embodying up to two characters at a time among the protagonists of the series, you will face your opponents (elves, tramps, Mongol hordes …) in turn-based combat reminiscent of Japanese RPGslike Final Fantasy or Pokemon. The Stick of Truth does not stop at this lineage, however, and offers a major difference in its combat system: in addition to the orders you give turn-based, you will need to press certain buttons during use. of your skills to increase their power (as in the Paper Mario series). An operation that requires timing, and allows the dynamism of the fights to be increased tenfold to make them sometimes intense and exciting moments. What a shame, however, that the publisher has not provided more difficulty modes: even by setting the difficulty to the maximum, those used to role-playing games will have no trouble overcoming the toughest enemies.

The shortcomings of the PC version of the Stick of Truth are more disturbing. From the start, it is clear that South Park was primarily developed for gaming consoles, and offers unsatisfactory ergonomics for PC . The two action buttons (one allowing you to strike with your weapon, the other to act on your environment) tend to merge quickly, and we spend our time pressing one or the other The haphazard. The menus and inventory are also impractical, and it is strongly recommended to play with the controllerfor maximum comfort. Note all the same that the developers had the good idea to integrate a fart button, which allows you to happily flatulate all around you for often surprising and always hilarious results!

A brilliant achievement that will make a milestone

Anyone who has had the chance to try their hand at this South Park: The Stick of Truth has quickly come to the same conclusion: it feels like being in the cartoon is incredible . The graphics reproduce those of the series with an unfailing fidelity: where the previous South Park games tried in vain to recreate the universe of the series in 3D, the Stick of Truth manages to completely recreate the characters and decorations in paper cut cartoon. The result is breathtaking, and doubles as an outstanding sound achievement!

The dubbing are all performed by the actors of the original series , with many lines of dialogue that help give the impression of living a gigantic episode of the series. As for the music, they are remarkably well composed: cheerfully pasticating themes dear to geek culture (from Skyrim to Pirates of the Caribbean), they are a real treat for the ears.

Finally, note that the huge map of the game faithfully transcribes the city of South Park (even offering a foray into Canada!). The places of the series are all present, as well as the characters. The sense of detail is pushed, even if we regret the limit of the refresh rate of the image (restricted to 30 images per second in order to adapt to the television screens of game consoles) and the invisible walls that dot the town of South Park by forcing you to take certain specified paths. A regrettable detail for an “open world” game, which also offers a great feeling of freedom.

Great RPG or the ultimate South Park game?

The appeal of this South Park depends in part on your opinion of the series. If you can’t stand this riot of vulgar and provocative gags, it is more than advisable to go your way.
