Mr. Driller is a series of video games published by Namco. Mr. Driller gives the player the role of a drill moving through a screen full of blocks, making sure their air reserves don’t run out while avoiding being crushed by falling blocks, the games in this series are released for consoles such as PlayStation, Dreamcast, WonderSwan Color, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, DS, WiiWare, Xbox Live, Windows and iPhone. The main character of the games is called Susumu Hori, son of Taiz Hori, who was the protagonist of the original game Dig Dug.
The project, which will soon become Mr. Driller, began as the third installment of Dig Dug, the project will be called Dig Dug 3. In which hexagonal blocks were intended to be introduced, but the idea was rejected because the chain actions became very complicated. However, Namco executives were impressed with the idea and decided to continue the project.
In Mr. Driller, once the character and the country have been selected, the player will begin to drill into what appears to be endless colored blocks, finishing the level when the assigned depth (given in meters) is reached. The blocks can be combined with other blocks that have the same color, disappearing when a total of 4 blocks or more merge, there are a total of 4 colors: red, blue, green and yellow, there are also 3 types of special blocks: white blocks, which are pale-colored blocks that do not meet the blocks of the same color; glass blocks, blocks that disappear after a few seconds have passed; and X-blocks, which are brown blocks marked that take 5 lashes to destroy and also reduce your air reserves by 20%. The air reserve acts as a character’s life bar, and when it is less than 30%, the character’s face will turn blue (except for the color Wonderswan and Game Boy Color versions and the air capsule or skull balloon with the crossed bones will appear above his head, before the countdown. To prevent them from running out of air supply, the player must look for an air capsule that retains the 20% reserve. The player will lose his life if the character is crushed by the block or if their air reserve reaches 0%. The game is described as “Dig Dug knows Tetris.”
