It was announced in the September 2007 issue of Famitsu magazine and is the first game in the main series that is not initially released to arcade machines. The game was released in Japan on July 22, 2008, and November 28, 2008, in the United States by Ignition Entertainment.
An improved version for the PlayStation Portable called Metal Slug XX or Metal Slug Double X was released on December 23, 2009 in Japan. This version includes additional content and a multiplayer mode.
