The saga began in 1997 with a virtual pet known as Digimon Virtual Pet, based on the Tamagotchi. the franchise, however, its popularity skyrocketed with the release in 1999 of an animated series (Digimon Adventure) and the release of a video game called Digimon World. The Digimon saga ranked 54th out of 100 best anime in history in a 2006 Asahi television survey.
Virtual pet model distributed on the Japanese market by Bandai,4 which allowed the popularization of Digimon in Japan and sold 50 thousand units worldwide until March 2004.
The plot of the saga is based on a parallel world known as Digital World, which is inhabited by fictional creatures called Digimon. They are artificial life forms made of pieces and lost pieces of computer data, inhabited in electronic devices that possess non-volatile memories. Digimon is raised by people called “Tamers” (children chosen in Digimon Adventure and the Digimon 02 sequel) to fight the villains who threaten to destroy the balance of the digital world.
